Last existence: Bodhisattva in Tuṣīta Heaven
Part of a simple false-niche depicting the Bodhisattva in Tuṣita Heaven. Tuṣita is the abode of the deities and bodhisattvas. The buddha-to-be Maitreya resides here, as other bodhisattvas do before they are reborn in the human realm as buddhas. Śākyamuni also resided in Tuṣita before his last existence.
The base is plain, the jamb is moulded. There are large parallel horizontal tool marks on the back and a small squared tenon on the bottom.
The Bodhisattva is sitting in padmāsana on a throne. His left hand is on his lap probably holding a kamaṇḍalu. The throne features turned legs, a cushion, and a drape covering the front.
On the right and in the foreground, a male figure is sitting with his feet resting on a footstool. Above his head there are scant remains of smaller figures in an architectural setting. To the left of the bodhisattva, are still visible the feet resting on a footstool of another seated figure.
