About this site

This website displays the larger part of the collection of the Dir Museum in Chakdara, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The Dir collection contains a breadth of Buddhist sculptures from the historical region of Gandhāra which were excavated during a series of documented archaeological campaigns.

The collection was digitized between 2021 and 2024 within the scope of the DiGA project, funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research, and in collaboration with the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums of the Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPDOAM), Pakistan, and the Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan (MAIP).

The primary digital collection is hosted by the University Liberary Heidelberg as part of their heidICON platform. This website uses an experimental framework to display the collection. It serves as a place for experimentation in new approaches to visualize cultural heritage collections for different purposes. Being implemented as a so-called static website without a database backend, it requires only limited computing resources. As such, it builds on the principles of Minimal Computing and is heavily inspired by Wax.
